Matisyahu
W

ho is this Brothua' with
the soul-filled sounds,
singin'
like David and
with all that reggae-soul spirt?

Born Matthew Paul Miller---now
39 years of age and we at FW---as
his fans, love the fact Matisyahu
doesn't forgo traditional Hasidic
Jew garb.

True to form---out of West Chester,
PA, as it is his family settled in
White Plains, NY---Matisyahu was
brought up a Reconstructionist Jew,
his first expoloration of Jewish heri-
tage at the Alexander Muss High
Sch., in Hod Hasharon, Israel.

From there Matisyahu made the
decision to adopt Orthodox Judiasm
becoming Baal Teshuva around 2001
and found his way to the West Side
of Manhattan, to the Carlebach Shul.

Studying Torah at Hadar Hatorah---
a yeshiva for returnees to Judaism,
Matisyahu began his adoption of
hasidism.

Not long thereafter came his
marriage to wife, Tahlia and the
couple have two sons.

It was Rabbi Simon Jacobson's
book,
Toward a Meaningful Life,
that presented lyrical inspiration
to his 6th album,
Youth.
O
J
erusalem if I
forget you---
may my right
hand forget
what it is
supposed to do."
"
The verse in refrain---rings
out in Matisyahu's album,
"Jerusalem
(Out of Dark-
ness Comes Light)".

Matisyahu's vocal com-
mand rose with his first
recording---
Shake Off the
Dust...Arise, in 2004.

Roots Tonic his background
ground band---leading to his
mix of reggae, traditional rap,
and rock guitar solos---yet
the entirety of any one song
relegates the band more an
appendage, given this man
will not "rock" without God
resounding from his soul.

Consider
Matisyahu's
reflection,
from
A King
Without A
Crown
...lead-
ing the masses to God, in
such verse as...

"Giving myself to you
from the essence of my
being", "strip the layers
and reveal your soul",
"cup's already full", ask
God for mercy and He'll
throw you a rope".

Further you'll find his open-
ing verses in song and within
each repertoire sprinkled
with Hebrew and Yiddish.
Enter his tone and delivery
that of Jewish Cantors, as
Matisyahu speaks renders
"Aish Tamid eternally".
